Whistler Blackcomb Resort and the Mountain

Whistler, British Columbia is indisputably one of the finest ski destinations in the world. If you have never been to Whistler, you definitely should visit for one incredible ski vacation. Its appeal transcends many categories important to ski vacationers. The mountain itself is one of the very best and largest in the world with an incredible amount of varied terrain. The nightlife scene is one of the best of any ski resort. At the same time, Whistler makes for an incredibly family friendly ski trip with limitless lodging and recreational opportunities for the family. The mountain infrastructure and amenities are top of the line. The lodging and base village setup is bigger and more abundant and varied than most. The natural surroundings are exotic and gorgeous. Whistler Blackcomb is truly a world class ski destination in every sense of the term.

Whistler Resort offers 8,171 skiable acres of terrain. To put that size in perspective, Whistler is 2,882 bigger than Vail, the largest resort in America. The difference is easily as big once again as many complete resorts, even major ones. Whistler's proportions are huge and well rounded. There is abundant terrain for everyone. This is not a mountain where any skier or rider, regardless of ability level, will get bored over the course of a ski vacation or a season for that matter!

The setup at Whistler involves two mountains, Whistler and Blackcomb, each with a whopping 5,000 plus feet of vertical terrain that encompasses 200 trails, 3 glaciers that offer year round skiing, and 12 above tree line alpine bowls. The two massive mountains are joined at their respective bases by a large pedestrian base village complex that is subdivided into 3 distinct villages and a few other outlying neighborhoods. Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains have 38 lifts that include 4 high speed gondolas and 13 high speed chairs. The new Peak to Peak Gondola is scheduled to open on December 12, 2008 and represents an unparalleled modern feat of engineering that will connect the two peaks and their requisite terrain with an 11 minute gondola ride. This attraction was created with an eye towards the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics that will see Whistler Blackcomb hosting a lot of the skiing events as well as an influx of international tourists.

Whistler also has a combined 5 terrain parks, 1 super pipe, and a snow cross track. Average annual snowfall at the resort is a healthy 400 plus inches and the base elevation of the resort is just above 2,000 feet. Terrain breakdown by ability level is 20% beginner, 55% intermediate, and 20% advanced, a very healthy split by any standard considering there are over 200 trails.

Whistler Lodging

The focal point of the resort is Whistler Village, a bustling and sprawling pedestrian base village chock full of shops, dining options, aprŠs ski and nightlife hotspots, as well as lodging accommodations the extent and diversity of which are generally unmatched by any other resort base area. Whistler Village is also conveniently located for access to Whistler Mountain with the Whistler Village Gondola, the Excalibur Gondola, and the Fitzsimmons Express high speed quad all dropping right into the village. Accommodations in Whistler Village are generally only a short walk to mountain access.

Some of the primary accommodations options in Whistler Village include The Westin Whistler Village Resort, Hilton Whistler Resort and Spa, Crystal Lodge, Best Western Listel Hotel, Tantalus Lodge, Pan Pacific Mountainside Resort, Whistler Village Inn and Suites, and Blackcomb Lodge.

The Upper Village or Blackcomb Village is the second primary option that offers ski in ski out and short walking distance access to Blackcomb Mountain in a slightly quieter, mellower, and more contained setting than Whistler Village. The smaller scale lends itself to a bit more peace and quiet while still having a number of dining options and shops. There is a myriad of diverse lodging possibilities located in the Upper Village, many of which are located on the side of the mountain or at the base of the Wizard Express high speed quad and the Magic Chair 3 passenger fixed grip chair. The Excalibur Gondola is only a short walk away from the heart of the Upper Village and Whistler Village is likewise relatively easily accessible via short (10-15 minute) walk or free shuttle ride as well. The Upper Village is a great base of operations while being pretty convenient to all the supplemental dining and nightlife options offered in Whistler Village. Both villages can easily be skied to from one another as well.

Some of the primary lodging options found in Blackcomb Village (Upper Village) are the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, Four Seasons Resort Whistler, Glacier Lodge, Aspens on Blackcomb, Whistler Marriot Residence Inn, Le Chamoix, Wildwood Lodge, Horstman House, and The Woodrun, The Villas, Painted Cliff, and Snowy Creek.

Whistler Village North is a subdivision or annex of Whistler Village that requires a 10 minute walk or so to access the mountain. There are many find lodging options in The Village North as well as some great dining options . Lodging tends to be slightly less expensive in the Village North because it is a bit further removed, however; once again, access to Whistler Village and the mountain is still relatively convenient. Some of the primary lodging options in Whistler Village North include Delta Whistler Village Suites, Stoney Creek Northstar, Lagoons, and Sunpath, Tyndall Stone Lodge, and Whistler Town Plaza Suites. The Whistler Marketplace is also located in The Village North.

There are a few other areas where one can lodge to ski Whistler. Whistler Creekside is one such option that has recently emerged as a legitimate family oriented lodging base area rather than as simply a base area for day skiers to access the mountain via the Creekside Gondola. With the recent addition of the brand new rustically luxurious Nita Lake Lodge, as well as staples such as the First Tracks Lodge, Taluswood subdivision, and the Lake Placid Lodge, Creekside has become a great way to experience Whistler Blackcomb in a price friendly manner even for upscale accommodations. Creekside is a 5 to 10 minute drive or shuttle ride to Whistler Village.

Blueberry Hill and Nicklaus North are both residential neighborhoods centered around the Whistler Golf Club and the Nicklaus North Golf Club respectively that offer lodging in spacious townhomes and Whistler private house rentals at affordable rates. Both residential neighborhoods offer easy shuttle access to Whistler Village and Blueberry Hill offers some of the best views of the resort due to its elevated location.
