Additional Information
Crested Butte is a rarity in an era of mega resort destinations and the glitz, glamour, and commercialism that often accompany them.
The resort's self proclamation as both "Colorado's last great ski town" and the last best manifestation of "Colorado's true colors" does have its avid disciples, many of whom return to vacation in Crested Butte year after year. Indeed Crested Butte is a throwback to a simpler time. This privately owned family operation and the atmosphere surrounding it is intimate, quaint, rustic, and above all starkly removed from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the world. There is no mistaking that you are definitely not in Kansas anymore when you arrive in this awe inspiring destination, a perception grandly punctuated by the towering rugged peaks of the Elk Mountain Range that surround it. This natural and ruggedly rustic environment is pleasantly engaged and complimented by the resorts dedication to a progressive customer service philosophy and investment in world class modern amenities both on and off the mountain.
In the old days, only 10 short years ago, the predominant perception that Crested Butte Mountain Resort was primarily a bastion of steep expert terrain
enjoyable only to extreme skiers was perpetuated by its annual hosting of the US Extreme Freeskiing Championships, an event that is still hosted by the resort, as well as the resorts selection to host both the second and third Winter X Games in 1998 and 1999. With aggressive terrain expansions catering to beginner and intermediate skiers in the interim, the current terrain breakdown actually consists of 23% beginner terrain, 57% intermediate terrain, and 20% advanced terrain, a tribute to a strong vision of evolution towards a well rounded family friendly resort that is evident today.
Crested Butte has 121 trails on 1,167 skiable acres of terrain.
16 lifts, including 4 high speed quads,2 fixed grip quads, 2 triple chairs, 3 double chairs, 3 surface lifts, and 2 magic carpets service 2,775 vertical feet of terrain. Hikeable terrain extends the vertical rise an additional 287 feet to 3,062 total feet of vertical. The resort also offers 2 full terrain parks complete with a half pipe for your teen and kid rippers and huckers , one geared specifically towards smaller kids. The resort's base elevation is 9,375 feet and annual average snowfall.
The mountain is famous for its double black diamond extreme ungroomed and unmarked terrain,
most noticeably accessible from the North Face Surface Lift, but scattered in other areas throughout the resort. However, recent expansions, including the newer Prospect Lift, have been targeted towards opening intermediate terrain. Additional grooming capacity and upgrades to lifts servicing beginner trails have made the mountain an increasingly user friendly experience for all ability levels. Universal upgrades to lifts, base area facilities, and other on mountain skier services infrastructure as well as large investments in new base area lodging have also increased the resorts appeal as a family friendly destination.

Old standbys such as the Plaza Condominiums, Axtel, Whetstone, Three Seasons, and the Grand Lodge Crested Butte offer more moderate options with good proximity to the lifts.
The town of Crested Butte, located 1.5 miles from the Crested Butte Mountain Resort ase area, also known as the town of Mt. Crested Butte,
is an old Dollhouse Victorian mining town with tons of intimate charm and character. If not the ideal place to stay based on convenience to the mountain, it is definitely a must visit as far as shopping, restaurants , and nightlife. Most of the lodging options in town consist of Crested Butte private vacation home rentals with a smattering of smaller lodges, hostels, and bed and breakfasts .
