Telluride Ski Resort and the Mountain

Telluride Colorado is often referred to as the "most beautiful place you will ever ski". This claim is indeed substantiated by the unique majestic natural setting of the town of Telluride, recently incorporated town/base area of Mountain Village, and Telluride Ski Resort. Telluride is located 16 miles inside a box canyon and surrounded on three sides by the rugged San Juan Mountain Range of Southwest Colorado. The visual impact of their dramatic vertical ascent straight up from the edges of town lends itself to surreal perspectives characterized by minor pangs of vertigo experienced simply by the act of strolling down Main St. The combination of the colorful dollhouse victorian architecture of the town of Telluride, the charming and upscale European/mountain rustic pedestrian village of Mountain Village, the vast expanses of world class Telluride Ski Resort, and the magical Rocky Mountain setting make this a "must experience" destination for avid skiers and those simply seeking a magical getaway unlike anything else they have ever experienced before in a ski destination. Most people are surprised to discover just how large, varied, and formidable a ski mountain one has at their disposal when they ski Telluride for the first time. The resort has kept the innovations and new terrain coming at a steady clip over the past decade to complement the rugged ski mountain Telluride has been blessed with. and to keep this winter playground interesting and exciting. Recent projects have included the opening of Prospect Bowl in 2002. The prospect bowl expansion added 700 lift serviced skiable acres and three new high speed quads with a unique cross section of terrain that delivers an "extreme" "back country" experience accesisble to intermediate skiers. A large quantity of hikable expert terrain has also been opened in the last 4 years between Iron Bowl and Palmyra Peak. The newest expansion, scheduled to be completed for 2008 2009, is the new Revelation Lift that opens up new expert terrain in Revelation Bowl. These expansions combined with existing expert terrain and a large quantity of beginner and intermediate runs make for a well rounded mountain that will keep skiers of all skill levels entertained for the duration of a week long vacation and well beyond.

Telluride Ski Resort offers over 2,000 skiable acres, over 4,400 vertical feet of skiable terrain, and 100 trails of which 24% are beginner, 38% are intermediate, and 38% advanced creating a nice cross section of terrain for all ability levels. Telluride Resort also boasts impressive uphill lift capacity with 18 lifts including two high speed gondolas and 7 high speed quads. The main Gondola is unique in that it also serves commuters during the day and at night traveling between Telluride and Mountain Village, the newer European flavored pedestrian base area that recently incorcoporated as its own town. The longest run on the mountain is a green run known as Galloping Goose that is unique in that beginner skiers can hone their skills from top to bottom on a 4 plus mile run. See Forever is an intermediate highlight. This run puts intermediate skiesr at the very top of the mountain and is true to its namesake offering extraordinary views of the rugged San Juan Mountain Range encompassing Telluride and beyond.

Telluride's awesome bumps off of Lift 9, including runs like The Plunge (when not groomed), Spiral Stairs, and Powerline to name a few, are a playground for expert skiers. More bumps and steeps like Coonskin, Milk Run, and Mine Shaft line the front side of the mountain and descend straight into town at expert pitches. Lift accessible as well as hikable off piste extreme terrain like Gold Hill Chutes, Black Iron Bowl, and Palmyra Peak add to Telluride's reputation for having exceptional advanced terrain. The Mountain Village Side of the mountain is a booming mecca for beginner and intermediate skiers with rolling and gentle aspen covered slopes that are wide open and unintimidating. There is truly enough variety on Telluride's ski mountain to please all skier levels and enough terrain to keep everyone entertained and busy for an entire vacation.

Telluride Lodging

There is a sizable lodging base in the town of Telluride most of which is a short walk or shuttle ride to the mountain. Telluride lodging ranges from moderate to luxury. Because of the layout of the town in relation to the San Miguel River and the mountain, Telluride ski in ski out lodging is relatively limited, but most everything is still pretty convenient to the skiing. Telluride lodging with walkable proximity to the Gondola, while not technically ski in ski out, is very convenient for accessing the mountain and Telluride's true ski in ski out lodging surrounding Lift 7 is an option for those that insist on the convenience of ski in ski out lodging even though arguably being nearer to the Gondola, is more convenient than being ski in ski out to Lift 7 which accesses mainly expert terrain.

Luxury Telluride Lodging, including the main bulk of luxury Telluride vacation home rentals, can be found in abundance on the other side of the mountain in Telluride's Mountain Village, or Mountain Village, Colorado. There is a good amount of ski in ski out lodging available in the form of both ski in ski out condominiums and house rentals on the Mountain Village side. Luxury lodging in Telluride's Mountain Village is in abundance for the discriminating traveler used to high end accommodations. The Telluride Gondola is the commuter's lifeline between town and Mountain Village offering free nighttime access for those wanting to go out to eat or shop on either side of the mountain. Most of Telluride's shopping and nightlife is based in town, but there is an ample assortment of shops and restaurants in Mountain Village as well. Mountain Village is almost fully pedestrain in the tradition of many European Resorts, and lodging in the Mountain Village Core is mainly accessible by Gondola rather than car. Most of the lodging in Mountain Village is located a short walk to the mountain or ski in ski out. Child Ski School and beginner adult ski school also takes place on the Mountain Village side of Telluride.
