Vail Ski Resort and the Mountain
Where to begin? Vail has been voted the top ski destination in North America 14 times out of the last 20 years by the Ski Magazine Reader's Poll, making it by far the most consistent and dominant vote getter during this time frame.
Just recently, Deer Valley, Utah has claimed this honor having been voted number 1 in 2007 and 2008, however; Vail Resort only fell to an impressive number 2 ranking both years, proving thay it has consistent staying power at or near the top of the list in the eyes of the skiing public.
Much of Vail's allure is the ski mountain that remains in many ways unparralleled, and is generally regarded as one of the finest in the world.
Vail offers 193 trails on 5,289 skiable acres, the most in America and the second most in North America after Whistler/Blackcomb, British Columbia, that boasts over 7,000 skiable acres. This vast amount of terrain is serviced by 32 lifts including a gondola and 14 high speed quads. Vail's vertical drop is 3,450 feet. Vail's front side alone has 127 trails, more than many major ski resorts offer in their entirety, consisting of everything from groomed runs suitable for beginners and intermediates, 4 terrain parks, to lengthy advanced mogul runs. The front side's runs culminate in one of three primary Vail Base Areas, Vail Village, Lionshead Village, and Golden Peak.
It is Vail's legendary Back Bowls that put the resort in its own elite catagory.
As the story goes, when Earl Eaton, Vail's discoverer and founder, shared the views of the Back Bowls for the first time with his partner, Pete Seibert, after a 7 hour climb up the deserted front side, on May 7, 1957, Seibert was said to have exclaimed "My God, we've climbed all the way to heaven." Seibert was referring to the 6 plus mile expanse of treeless powder filled bowled ski terrain stretching out in front of his eyes that to this day are generally considered to represent the best in bounds bowl skiing in the world.
Blue Ski Basin is the third distinct area on the mountain at Vail.
This terrain expansion was opened in 2000 and added 520 skiable acres characterized by tree skiing opportunities and a rustic back country feel of largely unmodified natural terrain.
Vail Lodging
Vail has two primary lodging bases, Vail Village and Lionshead Village, as well as multiple less centralized areas where one can find accommodations that include Golden Peak, East Vail, and West Vail.
Vail Village, a Bavarian motiffed dining and nightlife hotspot, is the most popular location for those seeking easy access to the ski mountain and proximity to the high profile, legendary, fast paced nightlife that Vail has also established a well deserved reputation for. The Lodge at Vail is an example of luxury Vail Village lodging located steps from the ski mountain. Vail's Mountain House and the Tivoli Lodge are examples of Vail Village Lodging located a short walk from the mountain. There are very few true ski in ski out properties in Vail Village, but there are a lot of properties that are a very short walk to the Vista Bahn Express high speed quad. Near Mountain Lodging in Vail Village generally comes at a premium, but Ripley's Mountain Adventures can offer you nice discounts on Vail Village Lodging relative to the market because of our wholesale status based on longstanding relationship with Vail Village properties. Vail Village Lodging can range from luxury to deluxe in quality.
Lionshead is the second primary lodging base in Vail.
The Eagle Bahn Gondola emanates from the Lionshead Base Area making Lionshead arguably a more convenient access point to the mountain than even Vail Village, but still not as popular. Lionshead, like Vail Village, has a very limited amount of true ski in ski out lodging options, but almost all Lionshead lodging is an easy walk to the Gondola. Lion Square Lodge is one of the few examples of true ski in ski out lodging property in Lionshead. Montaneros Condominiums are an example of a 3 to 5 minute walk to the gondola. The Arrabelle at Vail Square is one of the newest Lionshead properties. This full service luxury hotel designed with European elegance in mind is located steps from Vista Bahn Gondola.
Lionshead also has an assortment of shops, restaurants, and nightlife options, and is also located a short shuttle ride from Vail Village to access the rest. Lionshead lodging is generally expensive in the scheme of destination ski resort lodging, but the good news is that Ripley's Mountain Adventures can get you the best available price for premium Lionshead Lodging. Vail is well known as one of the most expensive ski resorts, but Ripley's can get you the best possible deal on a Vail ski vacation. Again, Lionshead Lodging ranges from to deluxe to luxury Vail accommodations.
Vail's Golden Peak Base Area is more of a skier services base area than a lodging base area, but there are a few Vail lodging options within a short walk of Golden Peak.
Because Vail Children's Ski School is headquartered in the Golden Peak Base Area, some families opt to lodge in close proximity to make access to their children's ski lessons as easy as possible in the morning. Ripley's Mountain Adventures can get you a great deal on Vail Golden Peak Lodging with easy access to Vail Children's Ski School. Manor Vail is an example of Vail Golden Peak Lodging located across the street from the lifts and Vail's Children's Ski School Office and Meeting Area.
East Vail Lodging requires a shuttle bus to access the ski mountain, but can be more affordable than lodging in either Vail Village, Lionshead, or Golden Peak.
West Vail also has a few lodging options, for example the Vail Cascade Resort. The Vail Cascade represents Vail luxury lodging in a full service resort and conference center that actually has its own private lift to access Vail Resort. Ripley's can get your some nice discounts for staying at the Vail Cascade, which is extremely convenient and family friendly option for skiing Vail.
Vail private home rentals are available throughout the Vail Valley and in the Beaver Creek area.
A Vail private home vacation rental makes a lot of sense for groups or large families. Ask a Ripley's Mountain Adventures Vail lodging expert to get you a list of available Vail private vacation home rentals. We can show you everything from Vail ski in ski out house rentals to Vail vacation home rentals that are located on private or public transportation routes, all at the best rates available to rent a ski vacation house in Vail.
Getting to Vail
Vail is a pretty straight forward drive west on Interstate 70- 97 miles from the Denver area.
The drive is typically just under 2 hours time from Denver or 2.5 hours from Denver International Airport. Inclement weather can definitely impact drive times, and heavy snow in Summit County and/or over Vail Pass can certainly become a factor to consider when estimating drive times for your trip to Vail. Many visitors elect to fly into Denver and rent a car or use ground transfer services to get from Denver to Vail. Alternatively, many guests fly into Eagle Airport located just 31 miles from Vail. Flight schedules into Eagle are generally more limited and airfare more costly flying than they are flying into Denver. Rental cars or ground transfer services must also be used to get from Eagle Airport to Vail. Ripley's Mountain Adventures can take care of both your flight and ground service needs with one stop shopping for your complete Vail ski vacation package whether you choose to fly into Denver or Eagle.

Here is what one satisfied client had to say about booking with Ripley's Mountain Adventures:
"Brian/Justin,
I just wanted to say Thank You for helping set up our ski trip this year. Your agency did a fantastic job and was awesome to work with. I will definitely be recommending you guys to others! We had an unbelievable time and everything was great. I thought Christy's Sports Rental was extremely professional and friendly and our condos were awesome. We are already planning on coming out next year, same place, around the same time and will contact you then." Thanks Again!
