Salida is located in Chaffee County and is bordered on all sides by mountains. If wealth were measured vertically, Chaffee County would be the richest little county in the country. Fifteen of Colorado's 54 highest peaks, those taller than 14,000 feet - aka Fourteeners - reside here in south central Colorado. The elevation of the Salida, Colorado area ranges from just under 7,000 to over 14,000 feet on its highest peaks, providing some of the most spectacular views to be seen anywhere in the world. Chaffee County is on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains in central Colorado. Bordered on the west by the Sawatch Range, including the 14,000-Ft. Continental Divide, the eastern boundary of the county follows the Mosquito Range, descending toward the south. Located high in the Upper Arkansas Valley, the Arkansas River flows toward the southeast, between the two mountain ranges. Colorado is a Mecca for river enthusiasts. Crystal clear streams feed nascent rivers that ramble across white-capped mountain valleys and tumble down boulder choked granite gorges. There's a reason that Arkansas River rafting is one of the most popular spots in the country. Combine the scenic beauty of the Arkansas River Valley in the Colorado Mountains and the excitement of continuous whitewater and you get one of the most enjoyable white water recreation options available. The Arkansas River boasts some fantastic fly and spin fishing. You'll find plenty of variety, with endless riffles, runs, pools, undercuts, and overhanging brush. Most of the catch will consist of brown trout, with an occasional rainbow or cutthroat trout. Salida is also home to a Hot Springs pool. Water is collected underground and piped 5 miles from the source high in the majestic Rocky Mountains. This sparkling clear and odorless water was originally enjoyed by the Ute Indians. It flows continually into the various Salida Hot Springs pools, refreshing and warming them naturally.
