Between El Vado and Abiquiu, the Chama flows through a magnificent
sandstone canyon, New Mexico's most spectacular wilderness boating.

whitewater on the Rio Chama is mild, Class II rapids, making this
a perfect trip for all ages. Trips range from 1 to 3 days.

This popular trip combines two half-day excursions into one exciting
day! You start on the Orilla Verde section of the Rio Grande for a
nice relaxing morning, floating through spectacular, towering cliffs
with mellow class II rapids. The second half of your day will be spent
tackling the class III rapids on the Racecourse. The river narrows,
picks up speed, and before you know it, you're blasting through Albert's
Falls, the Narrows, and on to Big Rock Rapid. The Lower Gorge is a
perfect choice for first time rafters, with the morning section offering
an opportunity to get comfortable on moving water before moving onto
the more exciting water in the afternoon.

The ultimate whitewater thrill is a 16 mile stretch of the Rio Grande
River known as the Taos Box. It's called the box because of the steep
walls that make the canyon nearly impassable without a raft. The Taos
Box begins gently with several easy get ready class III rapids that
preview things to come. Keeping dry on the Taos Box isn't an option,
and that's part of the attraction. The Taos Box has long sections
of continuous whitewater, especially in its last four miles, which
begins with the notorious Powerline Falls, where the river drops rapidly
down between large basalt boulders. This section, called "Rio
Bravo" (Wild River), continues with rapids called Rock Garden,
Boat Reamer and Screaming Left-hand Turn. The last, and perhaps best,
rapid is found at the confluence of the Rio Pueblo de Taos. The intense
and challenging rapids make the Taos Box one of the most popular rafting
trips in New Mexico.

The five mile Racecourse section is our most popular half-day trip,
ranging from a wild class III + ride during the spring high-water
to a more technically demanding run as the water goes down and the
rocks come up in July and August. In spring and early summer, be prepared
for cold water, big waves, and plenty of excitement. As summer continues,
your guide will be depending on you to help maneuver the raft through
many tight slots, the water warms up and there is more opportunity
for warm-water fun such as swimming and boat surfing. The Racecourse
is a great trip for beginning whitewater enthusiasts as well as the
experienced rafter looking for a quick adrenaline fix.

Whiterock Canyon is breathtakingly beautiful and remote, with basalt
canyon walls towering over 1500 feet above the river. You will float
approximately 25 miles through Bandelier National Monument and the
lands of San Ildefonso and Cochiti Pueblos, surrounded by unique geology
dotted with numerous ancient petroglyphs and Anasazi Indian ruins.
At the end of the trip, you can choose to hike out of the canyon to
the headquarters of Bandelier National Monument on one of three trails
- about two and a half miles, four miles, or ten miles - or you can
ride in the boat as it is towed across Cochiti Lake. Whiterock is
an excellent family trip, with several rapids providing plenty of
excitement. It's an unmatchable way to explore the wilderness and
the history of this ancient region.

On this 2 day trip you will conquer the rapids of the Middle Box
and the Taos Box. You will hike into the canyon before spending two
days in the heart of the Wild and Scenic River, with almost no sign
of human civilization except for ancient Indian petroglyphs and a
picturesque ruin near the hot springs. The roar of the river lulls
you to sleep as the constellations wheel overhead in the narrow strip
of sky visible between the high canyon walls.

Three days in one of America's most breathtaking wilderness canyons,
with world-class whitewater to boot. Not to mention eagles, falcons,
ancient Indian petroglyphs, and hot springs. Day one begins with a
hike into the Middle Box, the most remote and rarely visited part
of the canyon. You will make wilderness camp below Ski Jump, the first
rapid of the Taos Box, at the foot of a side canyon called the Cathedral
which you can explore as the guides cook dinner. Day two brings the
white-knuckle whitewater of the Taos Box, broken by lunch on a small
beach beside the river, in the heart of the canyon. That night you
camp in the green meadows of the Orilla Verde Recreation Area, near
developed campgrounds with running water and flush toilets. On day
three you catch your breath with a serene float through Orilla Verde
before cranking up again for the thrilling rapids of the Racecourse.
This trip is a total Rio Grande experience.

When the lower water of summer arrives in the Gorge its funyak time.
After a moderate hike down into the spectacular Middle Box (further
upstream from where the day trip starts), you will receive a comprehensive
lesson by a professional teaching guide. For two days you will maneuver
your own personal boat through Class 2 and Class 3 rapids - you can
walk around the bigger rapids if you like. You will camp in a remote
spot on the rim of the Gorge, where your overnight gear will meet
you. Sleep under a vast dome of stars, and awaken to dawn over the
awe inspiring Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Gorge stretching
away beneath you. You must be a minimum of 12 years of age to paddle
a funyak. Younger children may ride with an experienced adult or guide.
